Joseph Vaz, piano
Americans composer William C White and pianist Joseph Vaz join forces on Galantries, a new album of solo piano works from Navona Records.
White, a Seattle-based composer whose works have been performed throughout North America, Asia and Europe, is also an in-demand conductor and teacher. He currently serves as music director of Seattle's Harmonia Orchestra and Chorus, regularly delivers pre-concert lectures for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and spent four seasons as Assistant Conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.
White met aspiring musician Joseph Vaz while conducting the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra in 2012, and the two have collaborated as protégé and mentor for more than a decade. Vaz is now an accomplished pianist who has performed in venues from New York's Carnegie Hall to Vienna's Arnold Schoenberg Center, and he performs these new works, written specifically for him, with insight and vigor.
These pieces - mostly piano miniatures, including a set of cheeky bagatelles and a suite of 'misfit dances' - sparkle with White's characteristic blend of classical sound and modern sensibility. It's the kind of music that makes a listener perk up and ask, 'what is this?'
Recorded 26-27 June 2024 at Oktaven Studios, Mount Vernon, NY, USA.
