The German composer Karl Amadeus Hartmann was born on 2 August 1905 in Munich. Various significant composers were amongst his teachers, including Webern and Scherchen. His opposition to the Nazi regime obliged him to withdraw from public life for several years. In 1945 he organized concerts of new music in Germany, and left at his death on 5 December 1963 (also in Munich) a sizeable corpus of music including eight symphonies.
