Josep Soler i Sardà

Catalan composer and teacher Josep Soler i Sardà was born in Vilafranca del Penedès on 25 March 1935. He studied with Cristòfor Taltabull and René Leibowitz.

His music includes operas, symphonies, piano concertos, string quartets and piano sonatas. He was one of the main Catalan members of Generación del 51 - a group of Spanish composers born between 1924 and 1938.

From 1982, he taught at the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts of St George in Barcelona.

He received a series of awards for his music, but in 2013 he refused to accept a Gold Medal of Merit in Fine Arts from the Spanish Ministry of Culture, stating 'I do not want anything to do with minister Wert and the government of Rajoy, because they are not interested at all in either music or education'.

Josep Soler died on 9 October 2022, aged eighty-seven.
