Founded in 1979, Long Beach Opera (originally Long Beach Grand Opera) is the oldest opera company in the Los Angeles/Orange County region of Southern California, USA. The company is known for its first performances of new and rare works. Its first executive director, from 1979, was Michael Milenski. In 2004, on Milenski's retirement, Austrian conductor Andreas Mitisek took over.
Significant productions have included Jonathan Dove's abridged version of Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, Powder Her Face by Thomas Ades, Richard Strauss' Elektra, and The Beaumarchais Trilogy.
