Alan Opie

English baritone Alan Opie was born on 22 March 1945 in Redruth, Cornwall. He studied at Truro School, Gonville and Caius College Cambridge, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the London Opera Centre. He joined Sadler's Wells Opera, becoming a principal baritone there while he was still a student.

Opie has sung with Bayerische Staatsoper, English National Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, New York Metropolitan Opera, Opera North, San Diego Opera, Scottish Opera, and has performed at Bayreuth, Covent Garden, La Scala, Paris Opera, Santa Fe Opera, and in Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Chicago, Santa Fe and Vienna.

He has recorded for CBS, Chandos, Decca, EMI and Hyperion, and is the recipient of two Grammy awards (in 1996 for Britten's Peter Grimes and in 1998, with Georg Solti, for Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg). He was nominated for the 1998 Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera.
