Alcides Lanza, an exponent of contemporary classical and avant-garde music using traditional, unusual and electronic instruments, was born on 2 June 1929 in Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina. His initial composition studies in Buenos Aires were with Julián Bautista and Alberto Ginastera. A series of scholarships and grants enabled him to study in the USA with Aaron Copland, Yvonne Loriod, Bruno Maderna, Riccardo Malipiero and Olivier Messiaen.
He moved to Canada in 1971 and became a naturalised Canadian citizen in 1978. From 1974 he was director of the electronic music programme at McGill University in Montreal.
As well as composing, he was a conductor, pianist and teacher, and gave recital tours in Scandinavia, Germany, Argentina and Brazil.
Alcides Lanza died on 17 July 2024, aged ninety-five.
