Austrian-born Swedish composer, conductor, pianist and teacher Hans Holewa was born in Vienna on 26 May 1905.
He studied music in Vienna then settled in Stockholm in 1937, fleeing the Nazis, working as a pianist and teacher, and introducing twelve-tone serial music to Sweden. Later he worked in Swedish Radio's music library and was a choral and band conductor in Gothenberg, but he found it difficult to feel at home in Sweden.
His output includes six symphonies, four piano concertos and a cello concerto, plus much chamber music and some vocal works. He was elected to the Swedish Royal Academy of Music in 1979.
Hans Holewa died in Stockholm on 26 April 1991, aged eighty-five.
