French cultural and opera manager Hugues Gall was born in Honfleur on 18 March 1940. He studied German literature at the Sorbonne and also studied at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris.
He worked at the French Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of National Education and the Ministry of Culture, then was general secretary of the Réunion des théâtres lyriques nationaux and director of the Grand Théâtre de Genève in Switzerland. As director of the Paris Opera (1995-2004) he was responsible for restoring the Palais Garnier and for the new Opera Bastille.
Subsequently he took various other roles and committee memberships, including being president of the Orchestre français des jeunes - the national youth orchestra of France.
Hugues Gall died at his home in Nice on 25 May 2024, aged eighty-four.
