Austrian pianist, accompanist and musicologist Jörg Demus was born at St Pölten on 2 December 1928. A collector and player in the forefront of the post-war period instrument movement, he studied in Vienna, later attending masterclasses given by Gieseking, Yves Nat, Michelangeli and Kempff. He made his début in Vienna in 1953, subsequently winning a reputation for not only the Viennese classics but also the French school. With his duet partner Paul Badura-Skoda he published a book on Beethoven's piano sonatas in 1970.
Jörg Demus died in Vienna on 16 April 2019 aged ninety.
