Hermann Scherchen, the German conductor noted for his championship of modern music, was born in Berlin on 21 June 1891. He moved to Switzerland in 1933, opening an electronic music studio, and conducting the Zurich Radio Orchestra. Some notable modern opera premières were under Scherchen's direction. Scherchen died in Florence on 12 June 1966.
