Chilean composer and teacher Gustavo Becerra-Schmidt was born in Temuco on 26 August 1925. He studied at the Chilean National Conservatory and then in Europe, taking back European avant-garde musical culture to Chile.
He was director of the Instituto de Extension Musical, taught at the Chilean National Conservatory and worked in Bonn as a Chilean cultural attaché. Following the 1973 Chilean coup, he settled in Germany, teaching at the University of Oldenburg from 1974.
Gustavo Becerra-Schmidt died at his home in Oldenburg on 3 January 2010, aged eighty-four.
