American organist and organ scholar Barbara J Owen was born in Utica, New York on 25 January 1933. She studied at Westminster Choir College in New Jersey, at Boston University and at various summer academies, and began performing at churches in Connecticut and Massachusetts. She studied and promoted American music for much of her career, leading to various prizes.
From 1963 until retiring in 2002 she was music director at the First Religious Society Unitarian Church in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and after that, from 2002 until 2007 she played at St Anne's Episcopal Church in Lowell, Massachusetts. In addition to these posts, she was librarian of the American Guild of Organists' organ library at Boston University, and held various other administrative posts.
Barbara Owen died on 14 October 2024, aged ninety-one.
