Composer and conductor Vittorio Gui was born in Rome on 14 September 1885. He conducted much opera. He was assistant to Toscanini in Milan in the 20s, and first appeared at Glyndebourne in 1952. He is also remembered for revivals of little-known Rossini operas. He died in Florence on 17 October 1975.
