Swedish trumpeter Niklas Eklund was born into a musical family in Gothenburg in 1969. He studied with his father - the trumpeter and conductor Bengt Eklund - at Gothenburg University's Music School and with Edward H Tarr at Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.
He spent five years performing as solo trumpet with the Basel Radio Symphony Orchestra then began his solo career from 1996, collaborating with many leading musicians and conductors. He was a baroque trumpet and historically informed performance expert, and he featured prominently in John Eliot Gardiner's 'Bach Pilgrimage' performances and recordings.
Niklas Eklund died on 10 April 2025, aged fifty-six.
