American lyric baritone Dominic Cossa was born in Jessup, Pennsylvania on 13 May 1935. He studied singing with Anthony Marlowe, Robert Weede and Armen Boyajian, and first appeared in 1961 at New York City Opera, first as Moralès in Carmen and then as Sharpless in Madama Butterfly. He continued to be mainly associated with French and Italian repertoire.
After winning the 1964 American Opera Auditions, he appeared in Florence and Milan. In 1967 he first appeared at San Francisco Opera, and in 1970 made his debut at New York Metropolitan Opera. He also appeared as a soloist with the Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic and National Symphony orchestras.
He taught at the Manhattan School of Music and became professor of music at the University of Maryland, College Park in 1988.
Dominic Cossa died on 6 October 2024, aged eighty-nine, leaving a few recordings of his vocal artistry.
