British orchestral and opera conductor Steuart Bedford was born in London on 31 July 1939.
He's recognised as one of the leading experts on the works of Benjamin Britten, and worked closely with the composer over a number of years. He was also joint director of the Aldeburgh Festival for more than twenty years.
Bedford, whose brother was the composer David Bedford, and whose grandmother was Liza Lehmann, conducted the first performance and made the first recording of Britten's Death in Venice.
Steuart Bedford died on 15 February 2021, aged eighty-one.
