Canadian composer Alan Belkin was born on 5 July 1951 in Montreal. He studied piano with Philip Cohen, organ with Dom André Laberge and Bernard Lagacé, and composition with Marvin Duchow, then with David Diamond and Elliott Carter at the Juilliard School of Music.
At the Université de Montréal, he teaches composition and writing skills and also coaches various chamber groups, and provides, on his website, free texts about various subjects connected with composition and music.
Belkin's output includes piano and violin concertos, eight symphonies, four string quartets and other chamber music. His music has been played in various countries, including Australia, Canada, Mexico, Europe and the USA.
