German bass and TV presenter Günter Wewel was born in Arnsberg on 29 November 1934. After training as a civil servant, he studied voice at Dortmund Conservatory and then with Rudolf Watzke and Johannes Kobeck.
He was a member of Dortmund Opera from 1963 for the rest of his career, but also appeared at Bavarian State Opera, Hamburg State Opera, Staatstheater Stuttgart, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Cologne Opera, Staatstheater Hannover, Budapest National Opera, and in Paris, Strasbourg, Bordeaux, Rouen, Salzburg and Zürich.
He was also known for presenting more than 150 episodes of the German TV series Kein schöner Land.
Günter Wewel died in Arnsberg on 9 May 2023, aged eighty-eight.
