Australian baritone John Shaw was born in Newcastle, New South Wales on 12 October 1924 into a musical family - both his grandfathers were singers, and he became interested in singing when very young. Later he studied in Melbourne.
Shaw worked in his native Australia - Victoria's National Theatre Movement - and, from 1958, in the UK at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden.
John Shaw died of cancer on 24 February 2003 in Sydney, aged eighty-one.
