German-American music publisher Gustav Schirmer, who founded the music publishing company of that name in 1861, was born on 19 September 1829 and lived until 6 August 1893. This company supported generations of gifted American composers, including Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, Paul Creston, Roy Harris, and Gian Carlo Menotti. That tradition remains active today.
