Albert Schweitzer

The eminent theologian, medical missionary, Bach scholar and organist, Albert Schweitzer, was born at Kaysersberg in Alsace on 14 January 1875. He studied in Germany and France, and thereafter gave Bach concerts in Europe. He undertook a new edition of J S Bach's organ works and also wrote a masterly biography. The latter part of his life was spent as a medical missionary in the French Congo. He died in Lambaréné, Gabon on 4 September 1965, aged ninety.
