The award-winning Romanian folk music composer, conductor, accompanist and orchestrator Paraschiv Oprea was born at Drăgășani on 14 February 1937 into a family of musicians.
He made numerous recordings of popular Romanian instrumental and vocal music for the Romanian state record label Electrecord (which has been re-releasing some of his recordings on CD). He was awarded a Discul de Aur (Golden Disc) for this work, and gave concerts all over the world.
Paraschiv Oprea died in Bucharest on 21 March 2004, aged sixty-seven.
