He was organist of Torshov kirke in Oslo (1946-1982) and he founded and conducted two choirs - Det Norske Solistkor (1950-1990) and Schola Cantorum (1964-1985).
He taught choral conducting at the University of Oslo (1964-1985) and received several awards for his contributions to Norwegian music.
Knut Nystedt died whilst asleep at home in Oslo on 8 December 2014, aged ninety-nine.
