Norwegian choral composer, conductor and organist Knut Nystedt was born in what is now Oslo on 3 September 1915, and his teachers included Aaron Copland.
He was organist of Torshov kirke in Oslo (1946-1982) and he founded and conducted two choirs - Det Norske Solistkor (1950-1990) and Schola Cantorum (1964-1985).
He taught choral conducting at the University of Oslo (1964-1985) and received several awards for his contributions to Norwegian music.
His compositions, mainly based on sacred themes, show the influence of Palestrina and other early church music.
Knut Nystedt died whilst asleep at home in Oslo on 8 December 2014, aged ninety-nine.
