Angolan singer and songwriter Ruy Mingas was born in Luanda on 12 May 1939 into an influential and musical Angolan family, and learned much, musically, from his uncle, Carlos de Aniceto 'Liceu' Vieira Dias.
One of his main claims to fame is as composer of Angola Avante, the Angolan national anthem. In addition to having a robust musical career, he was also an athlete, a businessman, a diplomat, a freemason and a politician.
Ruy Mingas died on 4 January 2024, aged eighty-four, in Lisbon, where, from 1989 until 1995 he had been Angolan ambassador to Portugal.
