Spanish guitarist and composer Antonio Membrado was born in Madrid on 21 March 1935. He played the laúd from 1945 and the guitar from the age of thirteen, and also studied piano with Pedro Carre at Madrid Conservatory.
In 1956 he began winning prizes for his guitar playing, including the International Competition in Geneva, which launched his international career.
In 1959 he moved to France, and from 1963 he made recordings of some of his own guitar music, plus works by Bach, Brouwer, Burchard, Milan, Schubert, Villa-Lobos and Vivaldi.
In parallel to performing, he also taught guitar at the National Academy in Bourg-la-Reine.
Antonio Membrado died on 3 December 2016, aged eighty-one.
