German dramaturg, journalist, librettist and opera manager Andreas K W Meyer was born in Bielefeld on 2 June 1958. He studied composition privately with Rudolf Mors and musicology at the University of Münster.
He wrote the libretto for Wilfried Hiller's 1998 opera Der Schimmelreiter (The Rider on the White Horse) based on Theodor Storm's novella.
He worked as a freelance critic from 1987, specialising in music by Carl Orff and Allan Pettersson, and as a dramaturg at Kiel Opera House (1993-2003) and at Deutsche Oper Berlin (2004-12), reviving forgotten early twentieth century operas.
From 2013 until his death from heart failure on 8 April 2023, aged sixty-four, he was manager of Oper Bonn, where he was instrumental in reviving operas by Braunfels, Reznicek and Waltershausen, and where he explored operas which disappeared under Hitler's regime.
