Thomas Füri

Swiss violinist and teacher Thomas Füri was born on 22 July 1947. He studied with his father, Erich Füri, with Max Rostal at the  Hochschule für Musik Bern and with Ivan Galamian at Juilliard.

He led orchestras in Koblenz, Lausanne and Basel (1973-80), and was leader of Camerata Bern (1979-93). From 1985 he was a member of the chamber music ensemble I Salonisti, which specialises in playing 'salon' music - background music for passengers on ocean liners, and he was in the group when it performed as the ship's band in James Cameron's 1997 film Titanic. From 2000 he played with the Aria Quartet. His instrument was a 1761 violin by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini.

He taught at academies in Winterthur and Zürich (1980-91).

Thomas Füri died on 23 July 2017, aged seventy.
