Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach

J S Bach's third son, Carl Philipp Emanuel, was born in Weimar on 8 March 1714. It was intended that he should enter the legal profession but he switched to music whilst still at Frankfurt University. As a composer much of his efforts were upon the keyboard sonata, which benefited from his development of the form and the extent of his interest. It resulted in about 200 sonatas. He also wrote choral and orchestral works, and lived until 14 December 1788.
