Robert Schumann and Clara Wieck
12 September 1840 brought the marriage of Robert Schumann and Clara Wieck, who first met in 1828. The marriage had long been opposed by Clara's father, yet for a few years it undoubtedly inspired Robert to one of his richest periods of composition before the deterioration of his mental health caused the suicide attempt. His last two years were spent in an asylum.
