Austrian composer and conductor Gerhard Wimberger was born on 30 August 1923 and studied at the Salzburg Mozarteum.
After serving in the army in World War II, he was a vocal coach at the Vienna Volksoper and then a conductor at the Salzburg Theatre.
Later he taught conducting and composition at the Salzburg Mozarteum, and as a member of the board of directors of the Salzburg Festival for many years, was influential on the festival's development.
Wimberger died in October 2016, aged ninety-three.
