Russian ballet dancer Vladimir Shklyarov was born on 9 February 1985 in Leningrad, where he trained at the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet. His teachers included Vitaly Afanaskov.
On graduating in 2003, he joined the Mariinsky Ballet, and became a principal there in 2011. He danced a series of roles, including leads, in many ballets, and also appeared as a guest dancer at American Ballet Theater (2014 and 2015), Bavarian State Ballet (from 2016) and the Royal Ballet in London (2017).
In 2022 he was very critical on social media of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, stating that he was against warfare, but later deleted his post and was silent on the matter thereafter.
He tragically died when he fell from his fifth floor apartment in St Petersburg on 16 November 2024, aged only thirty-nine. An investigation concluded that his death was an accident. A fellow dancer related that he had lost his balance after smoking on the balcony.
