Mariana Sîrbu

Romanian violinist and teacher Mariana Sîrbu, whose name was sometimes also spelt Sârbu, was born in Iași in 1948 or 1949. She studied in Bucharest with Ștefan Gheorghiu and then worked as his assistant for several years. Her family moved to Western Europe in 1977 and she taught in Florence, Leipzig, Limerick and Sermonetta.

Her international performing and recording career included ten years as concertmaster of I Musici, and she recorded Vivaldi's The Four Seasons with this group. She also recorded Locatelli's twelve concertos for solo violin.

Mariana Sîrbu died on 1 August 2023. aged between seventy-three and seventy-five.
