Swedish cellist and conductor Mats Rondin was born on 21 September 1960 and studied at Stockholm's Royal College of Music, at the Edsberg Music Institute, with William Pleeth in London and also with Ralph Kirshbaum and Mstislav Rostropovich.
He was principal cellist in the Malmö Symphony Orchestra and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra.
As a passionate chamber musician and a cello soloist with many of the Swedish orchestras, plus appearances in Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands and Norway, he had a remarkably broad repertoire, from J S Bach to the avant-garde.
In 2003 he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, and he was professor of cello at Lund University's Malmö Academy of Music from 2005 until his death on 11 October 2014.
