Russian cellist Gregor Piatigorsky was born 17 April 1903 and died on 6 August 1976. William Walton's cello concerto was dedicated to and premiered by Piatigorsky in 1957. Before becoming an international soloist he was principal cellist of the Berlin Philharmonic.
