Serge Koussevitzky

Born in Russia on 26 July 1874, Serge Koussevitzky started his crowded life as a double bass virtuoso and conducting around Europe from 1910. In 1924 he was appointed to the Boston Symphony Orchestra and from the first was a champion of modern music. Later the Koussevitzky Foundation was formed and even greater efforts were made to commission, notably Bartók for his Concerto for Orchestra. Koussevitzky died in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, on 4 June 1951.
