French pianist, composer and teacher Bruno Ducol was born in Annonay on 22 March 1949. He studied at the Conservatoire National de Région de Lyon and then at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris, where his teachers included Olivier Messiaen and Pierre Schaeffer.
As a composer he was fascinated by volcanos and myths about volcanos, giving rise to the work Alpaya, en bleu et cendres (Alpaya, in blue and ashes) for four percussionists and an electroacoustic device. His output included solo and chamber music, orchestral, choral, vocal and electroacoustic music. His son, Clément Ducol, is also a composer.
Bruno Ducol died in Paris on 13 January 2024, following a long illness. He was seventy-four.
