Kai-Young Chan

Kai-Young Chan is a Hong Kong-based composer who was born on 1 June 1989. He studied composition at the University of Pennsylvania and was part of the first artist delegation of the American Composers Forum to the Havana Festival for Contemporary Music in Cuba - a historic tour which was documented by US National Public Radio.

Kai-Young Chan's music is performed on various different continents by organisations such as the Albany Symphony, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, the Mivos Quartet and the Prism Quartet.

He teaches at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and is an active researcher in subjects such as turning constraints into creativity - an example of this being how text-setting constraints in the inherently musical Cantonese language can become a catalyst for creativity in contemporary music.
