Austrian composer and teacher Peter Ablinger was born in Schwanenstadt, Upper Austria on 15 March 1959. He studied in Graz and Vienna.
He settled in Berlin, Germany in 1959, where he taught improvisation and experimental music at Musikschule Kreuzberg and founded and directed the Zwischentöne ensemble.
From 1980 he composed the White/Whitish series of works based on various aspects of white noise, and in 2005 he created a 'unique opera project' in Graz.
In 1999 he was one of the founders of the Zeitvertrieb publishing house.
He held academic teaching and research posts at Kunstuniversität Graz and Huddersfield University, and he gave lectures in Argentina, Austria, Germany, Switzerland and the USA.
Peter Ablinger died in Berlin on 17 April 2025, aged sixty-six. The archive of his works is held at the Academy of Arts in Berlin, where he had been a member since 2012.
