Jerzy Artysz

Polish baritone and teacher Jerzy Artysz was born in Sochaczew in central Poland on 18 November 1930. He studied at the Warsaw Music Academy and then with Maria Carbone in Milan.

His stage debut was at Janusz in Moniuszko's Halka at the Grand Theatre in Łódź.  He sang with the Grand Theatre in Warsaw for over a quarter of a century, touring the world with a wide repertoire of leading roles in works ranging from the early Baroque to contemporary.

Later he was artistic director of the opera studio in Barcelona (1990-94), he taught at the music academy in Warsaw, was a jury member at music competitions and took part in oratorio classes.

Jerzy Artysz died in Warsaw on 22 July 2024, aged ninety-three.
