Dejan Bravničar

Award-winning Slovenian violinist Dejan Bravnicar was born in Ljubljana on 1 October 1937. His father was the composer Matija Bravničar and his mother, Gizela Bravničar, was a ballet dancer and teacher.

He studied at the Ljubljana Music Academy, with David Oistrach at the Moscow Conservatory and with Pina Carmirelli at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.

His repertoire included over forty violin concertos, and music by Slovenian composers, and he performed with a series of conductors in many different countries. He was also active in playing chamber music, as a member of Trio Tartini.

From 1967, he was professor of violin at the Ljubljana Music Academy, where he was later also dean from 1993 until 2001.

He died on 21 March 2018, aged eighty-one, having made an important contribution to Slovenian music.
