Matthew Marcan returns home to Bristol to attend the funeral of his mentor and teacher, Richard, the director of music at the cathedral. He had always been led to believe that he would inherit Richard's job, and is dismayed to find it given to someone else. Matthew reluctantly accepts the assistant organist's role and quickly finds himself at odds with his lazy new boss. Meanwhile, he meets talented blues musician Chloe. He finds himself drawn to her, but a man from her past in the gothic American South is intent on finding her too. Inspired by classic thrillers like Don't Look Now, Cloister weaves the themes of obsession and vocation with a creeping sense of menace.
