American mezzo Dolora Zajick was born on 24 March 1952 in Salem, Oregon and grew up in Nevada. She studied voice with Ted Puffer, who helped her to develop her vocal technique and guided her through early career moves. She gained bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Nevada and then took additional studies at the Manhattan School of Music.
She is known for her roles in Verdi, such as her début with San Francisco Opera as Azucena in Il trovatore, which marked her entry to the international stage, and also Amneris and and Eboli.
She has sung with many opera companies, including New York Metropolitan Opera, Houston Grand Opera, La Scala and Covent Garden.
She is general director of The Institute for Young Dramatic Voices.
