Lithuanian violinist, conductor and teacher Saulius Sondeckis was born in Šiauliai on 11 October 1928.
He studied violin with Alexander Livontas at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre and conducting with Igor Markevich.
He founded the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, conducted the first performance on 30 April 1960 and remained artistic director and principal conductor until 2004. In 1988 he founded the St Petersburg Camerata.
He performed and recorded in Lithuania and abroad.
He died in Vilnius on 3 February 2016, aged eighty-seven.
