The prize-winning Italian avant-garde contemporary composer Salvatore Sciarrino was born in Palermo on 4 April 1947. Although attracted to the visual arts when young, he began making experiments with music from the age of twelve. Primarily self-taught, he took Franco Evangelisti's electronic music course at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome.
His music is known for its unique style combining unusual sound materials, isolated sounds, silences and quotations from previous music into richly detailed scores.
