The French cellist André Navarra (born 13 October 1911 at Biarritz) was world renowned for his prowess. He recorded the Elgar Cello Concerto with John Barbirolli in 1957 (a work which also marked his English début at Cheltenham in 1950 with the same conductor), and he gave the world première of Jolivet's Cello Concerto. Navarra toured internationally as a soloist, taught in France (Professor of Cello at the Paris Conservatoire from 1947), Germany and at Siena in Italy from 1954, where he died on 31 July 1988.
