Italian opera composer Michele Enrico Francesco Vincenzo Aloisio Paolo Carafa de Colobrano was born in Naples on 17 November 1787. After going to war in the campaigns against Napoleon, he turned to music, studying with Luigi Cherubini in Paris and becoming professor of counterpoint at the Paris Conservatoire (1840-58), where his students included Achille Peri.
His output of nearly forty operas, in a style reminiscent of Auber and Rossini, includes Le nozze di Lammermoor (1829) and La prison d'Edimbourg (1833). He also composed ballets and sacred works.
Michele Carafa died in Paris on 26 July 1872.
