The avant garde Lithuanian composer Vytautas Bacevicius was born at Lodz on 9 September 1905, and studied piano and composition at the conservatory in the same city. His early music is in the machinist style popular in the 1920s and 30s.
He moved to New York (via South America) in 1940, following the outbreak of World War II, and his Symphony No 2, written in the same year, depicts both the war and anxiety for his family remaining in Lithuania and Poland. With age, his music became more abstract and concise. He died in New York, in relative obscurity, on 15 January 1970.
