American oboist, musical saw player and portrait photographer David Weiss was born in New York City on 8 February 1947. At the age of fifteen he won a competition to play solo with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
He played in orchestras in Pittsburgh and Washington, and then was principal oboist with the LA Phil from 1973 until 2003 and also played the saw at many high profile venues, on TV and in films. His photos of conductors and instrumental musicians have been published widely.
He died on 24 May 2014, aged sixty-seven, whilst surfing off Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles.
