Belarusian composer Sergei Cortez was born in San Antonio, Chile on 18 February 1935, and emigrated to Russia in 1955 when he was twenty.
His music includes two one-act operas based on stories by Anton Chekhov - Jubilee and The Bear, plus Visit of the Lady. His two-hour grand opera Giordano Bruno with libretto by Vladimir Khalip, is published by Schirmer.
Sergei Cortez died on 28 June 2016, aged eighty-one.
