South Korean-born American violinist Ik-Hwan Bae was born in Seoul on 19 November 1956, and made his professional debut with the Seoul Philharmonic aged only twelve. He studied at the Fiorello H LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts and at Juilliard, both in New York City.
His performing career led him to most cities in Asia, Europe and USA. He took part in many chamber music festivals, and was artistic director of Bargemusic in New York City for thirteen years. In South Korea he was leader of the conductorless Hwaum Chamber Orchestra, travelling with them to Krakow and Puerto Rico.
He gave masterclasses all over the world, and taught at the Peabody Institute at John Hopkins University, Manhattan School of Music, Indiana University and the Korean National Institute for the Arts.
He died on 24 July 2014, aged fifty-seven.
